FORWARD THINKING THROUGH OUR HISTORY

Ever since 1765, when William Clutton inherited his father-in-law’s surveying business and began trading under his own name, Cluttons have been at the forefront of forward thinking within the property industry.

The early company, trading under the name William Clutton and Sons, was a pioneer in adding land agency to its original land surveying business. This was a route several other companies subsequently followed, and helped establish Cluttons as one of the pre-eminent surveying firms of the eighteenth century.

John Clutton, grandson of founder William, continued this tradition of forward thinking by taking the bold step to move the business to London in 1837 on the back of sudden growth of the surveying profession in the city.

John was respected as one of the greatest surveyors of the generation, and it was his vision which helped to create the Surveyor’s Institute in 1868, the forerunner to the modern day RICS. Clutton was elected the first President, and even helped negotiate the lease on the current headquarters in Parliament Square for the princely sum of £350 per annum. The RICS is now highly respected as the leading global institute for the property practice, a fitting legacy to Clutton’s professional and open character.

Cluttons continued to expand throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, continually adding new business lines and opening new offices. The company became well-known as the firm of choice for the management of London’s Great Estates, a tradition which continues to the present day.

Following the aftermath of the Second World War, where Cluttons helped play a defining role in the rebuilding of the country, attention turned to overseas expansion. Whilst the Arabian Peninsula, in particular the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi are now seen as global hubs of trade, finance and tourism, the region was a distinctly different place upon Cluttons’ arrival in the 1970s. Forty years later, Cluttons is now one of the market leaders in the Middle Eastern real estate industry.

With 2015 seeing the launch of new ventures into the developing economies of Nigeria, India and more, Cluttons continue to follow in the footsteps of John Clutton to take the road less travelled, in order to bring a modern, fresh approach to the property industry to areas with significant potential.

Whilst Cluttons is now recognised as the oldest practicing firm of surveyors in the world, the spirit of innovation and forward thinking that has underpinned our first 250 years will serve as the driving force for the future.
