Student accommodation

Student numbers are anticipated to increase over the coming years. The weakness of the pound against many foreign currencies means that studying in the UK has become cheaper for many overseas students and this has led to an increase in students coming to the UK in recent years.
In addition, the number of students from the UK going to, or staying on at, university is expected to increase as they look for an alternative to seeking employment at this time of increased unemployment. Currently, purpose-built student accommodation caters only for a small proportion of students with the majority of students residing in shared houses or Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). With most purpose-built student housing owned by both private operators, and universities operating at close to full capacity, the specialist student housing market clearly represents an opportunity for growth.
Cluttons acts for a wide range of clients operating in the student accommodation sector and has undertaken a diverse number of instructions. Such instructions include the acquisition and disposal of sites and properties suitable for redevelopment into student housing for retained clients, the valuation of existing student portfolios and the operating of planned preventative maintenance for existing operators.
Our clients include many universities and other educational establishments including fifteen of the Oxford Colleges. We also act for specialist developers, land owners and hospital trusts all operating in the sector.
