Sharjah has a reputation for dominance in the manufacturing sector and houses the industrial areas for the region, although the business and real estate sectors do contribute substantially the Emirates economy.

Sharjah is the third largest Emirate covering 2,600 square kilometres and is located 10 kilometres north-east of Dubai.

Because of its tendency to the industrial sector, Sharjah has attracted large companies from the oil sector, along with smaller companies who can take advantage of the free zone areas.

It is the policy of the Government of Sharjah to combine growth and development of business and trade with the need to protect its culture and heritage and attract tourism to the Emirate.

The local airport is currently undergoing substantial expansion and will be able to accommodate eight million passengers by early 2007.
