Chartered Structural Engineer



We are seeking a Chartered Structural Engineer to join our Project and Building Consultancy team in Oxford. The role will predominantly comprise building and civil design as well as project management, contract administration, site supervision and drawing checking. The Project and Building Consultancy team work with a wide range of valued clients in the utility sector, the Oxford Colleges and corporate sector.

We have specialist expertise in designing civil works for electricity distribution infrastructure (a work flow set to expand for the next decade or more with renewables, data centres and electrification of heating and vehicles). We are flood defence design experts, focussed on large private clients in the utilities, nuclear, manufacturing, industrial, commercial and distribution sectors.

The role is for a Chartered Structural Engineer to help grow and expand the team, and to assist our current graduate engineer with Chartership.

You will be involved in a range of projects including substation designs, solar farm installations, flood defence schemes, commercial refurbishments and residential refurbishments.


  • Concept and detailed structural design of projects including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber design
  • Structural assessments of existing buildings and design of repairs/refurbishments
  • Structural calculations to British Standards and Eurocodes
  • Oversee the design and production of civil and structural drawings
  • Liaison with external structural engineers and other sub-consultants
  • Determine project specifications by client requirements, and performance standards; complete technical studies; prepare cost estimates
  • Identify technical solutions and undertake feasibility studies to identify optimum designs
  • Represent the project and building consultancy department internally and to clients
  • Monitor the quality and accuracy of drawing production
  • Ensure engineering specifications and procedures are used and followed
  • Liaise with surveyors to forecast workload and resources required
  • Participate in client design meetings where required
  • Attend site for progress meetings and in a construction supervision capacity
  • Be responsible for and take accurate site measurements from inception through to construction to ensure accuracy of information produced
  • Ensure all work undertaken is produced accurately to standards

Essential qualifications

  • Master’s civil or structural engineering degree (MEng/MSc or similar)
  • Chartered Engineer with a relevant professional body (IStructE or ICE)
  • Full UK driving licence


  • A sound understanding of construction methods and processes
  • Strong knowledge of civil and structural engineering principles and use of technical analysis
  • Experience designing structures to Eurocodes, British Standards and Building Regulations
  • Experience using structural design software, preferably Autodesk Robot and Tekla Tedds
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Good understanding of CDM Regulations and the responsibilities of the Designer
  • Good understanding of bills of quantities and cost control
  • Good project management abilities
  • Experience of working on civils projects. Some experience in the residential and commercial sectors will be useful but not required
  • Client facing experience to meet with clients to give updates on projects
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Packages and an understanding of AutoCAD
  • Able to organise and prioritise workload to meet deadlines
