About Limehouse

Limehouse is in the borough of Tower Hamlets, northwest of Canary Wharf. Limehouse links directly with Wapping, close to the City. One of the area’s most distinctive features is the Limehouse basin, which is essentially a small lake fed by the Thames and is home to the small Limehouse Marina.

Limehouse’s rich maritime history comes from being a significant port in the last century, and it was also the centre for ship building and rope making in London. Narrow Street in Limehouse is still lined with Georgian townhouses and features The Grapes, a pub founded in 1583 and frequented by Charles Dickens. Parts of Limehouse retain this old world charm and perhaps surprisingly, affordable property can be found in parts of Limehouse.

Living in Limehouse

Limehouse is a combination of historic East London charm and modern London. The area benefits from several main thoroughfares, including the A13 (Commercial Road) and links to the DLR via Westferry, Shadwell and Limehouse, while Stepney Green and Mile End Tube stations connect to the District and Central lines respectively.

Limehouse is full of large open green spaces including Stepney Green Park, Whitehorse Road Park, Ackroyd Green Park, Kind Edward VII Memorial Park, St James’s Gardens and Ropemaker’s Fields. The high concentration of green areas means residents have access to the outdoors despite being in a very urban setting.

At the same time, those of a nautical persuasion have easy access to the Thames, Limehouse Marina and access to London’s long canal networks via Regent’s Canal and the Limehouse Cut.
