Flood risk consultancy: United Biscuits, Carlisle
After flooding at the client’s large factory site in Carlisle, for a second time in 11 years, Cluttons designed and project managed a comprehensive flood defence scheme to protect the site against future flood events.
How we helped
Within a year of the second flood Cluttons had designed and installed an automated flood defence system to protect the site, which was approximately 10 acres comprising a range of different buildings.
After initially carrying out a feasibility study to assess whether the factory could be protected from future flooding, the team undertook detailed site investigations to develop a design that met the site constraints and operational needs of the client. The solution includes 850 metres of perimeter wall, worked with existing structures and harmonised with the architectural design so that the new installations blend with the site.
We acted as project manager, designer and lead consultant to provide end-to-end service delivery, working closely with the factory management and contractor during the construction phase, adapting the designs to meet site conditions, and accelerating the programme allowing the site to remain operational throughout the works.

Outcome
The result of the works is a fully automated system with drainage valves, flood defence gates and pumps which can all be operated by one person. The entire site is flood defended within 5 minutes and means that in the future the business will not have to shut down whilst recovering from a flood event. This protects the business, community and local jobs.
