Flood defence for
EDF Energy’s nuclear
power stations

Nuclear power plant with a red field

Following the devastation of the earthquakes in Japan in 2011, Cluttons was appointed as a lead
designer by EDF Energy for their Japanese Earthquake Response project in the UK.

How we helped

Utilising years of experience in flood defence, our team provided valuable design advice and implementation of flood defence solutions to safeguard half of EDF’s fleet of nuclear power stations in the UK. We provided unique flood defence solutions and design for highly complicated, congested and critical locations on site.

Specialist products and materials were required following demonstration that they were appropriate for very challenging environments and conditions. The design brief was to provide outstanding long term performance coupled with resistance to heat, chemicals and pressure in some of the most difficult locations imaginable.

Services provided:

  • Design
  • Flood defence solutions

The outcome

As a result EDF Energy now utilise our design solutions across their portfolio. Available flood market products were assessed for suitability and rigour. A range of innovative solutions were developed and implemented for extreme conditions, developing a knowledge base that benefits future projects.
