SSE: Innovating in the
design of distribution
substations

Cluttons has held a civil consultancy framework agreement with SSE Power Distribution since 2007. Our team has been working with SSE on wider major projects for over 25 years introducing innovations to improve the design of its new facilities, supporting them through the upgrade of their equipment across the UK.
How we helped
SSE tasked Cluttons with designing a new distribution substation in Oxfordshire, comprising a switch house and two transformer bays. The site presented several challenges: it was bordered by a river and a footpath, was in close proximity to a school and residential properties and had an existing 1960s substation and transformers on-site.
Drawing on extensive experience, Cluttons’ energy and utilities team implemented several innovative solutions. They used a piling technique with large circular steel tubes instead of traditional foundations, reducing construction impact. The building design was raised for flood protection and easier maintenance. Precise cable planning ensured optimal placement of ducts and fire protection. A raised concrete bund was installed around transformers to contain potential oil leaks and protect against flood water.

The outcome
As a result, Cluttons delivered a well engineered, sustainable substation design that minimised disruption to the local community. The design incorporated flood protection measures, facilitated easier construction and maintenance, and ensured environmental safeguards. This project showcases Cluttons’ ability to provide bespoke, innovative solutions in challenging environments, demonstrating our expertise in energy infrastructure design.
