Powering data centres:
supporting SEGRO’s rapid data centre expansion

The UK’s need for data centres is growing, driven by the development of artificial intelligence and smart technology.
Developers are keen to create new facilities have a queue of operators ready and waiting to take schemes forward. One such developer is SEGRO who own the second largest data hub in Europe which is expanding at pace and for whom Cluttons’ energy and utilities team is providing the best possible power infrastructure solution for each data centre.
Data centre power provision needs to be safe and reliable. This requires multiple units of equipment to provide the
resilience required. Back up equipment needs to be accommodated and must be available in safe fire protected
areas to maintain power supplies.
How we helped
Utilising advance methods born through an extensive track record in the sector, Cluttons delivers solutions to key
challenges around data centre space requirements, allowing the developer to maximise a facility’s capacity to house
computer servers with clever design that also accommodates ancillary facilities including the substation. This includes the provision of drainage and services, carefully planning construction processes for utilities to be connected
efficiently and all done within the quickest time possible.
Services provided:
- Civil and structural engineering
- CAD design and drawings
- Coordinating electrical works and cabling
- Site inspections for quality
- Defect analysis.
The outcome
While each substation has to perform similarly, each development is unique and Cluttons continues to use its experience and expertise to support SEGRO’s growth plans in this sector which in turn is supporting the UK’s need for data housed within the security of its own borders.
Sustainability is increasingly a priority for all data centre developers, not least SEGRO. Cluttons is working on a
number of innovations to reduce the carbon footprint of substations, such as introducing green roofs and walls, as well as more sustainable materials for panels.
